My wife brought home a pizza last night for everyone (besides me of course). I was tempted so I started to open the box and Melissa (my wife) slapped my hand and closed the box. She tells me no when I am feeling tempted to cheat and has been a big part of my success so far. So how do you resist the urge to eat junk food?

This is a good one :) It is VERY hard to resist at times. The most important thing is to first be sure the support team you have understands what you are trying to do and truly supports you. For example, when Jason is dieting for a show, I don't sit in front of him with a big plate of cheesy nachos (his favorite) lol. It's hard to resist junk food if it's in your face, so try to keep it out of your home as much as you can.

Also, year-round, we eat extremely clean. We don't have an "off-season". Being fit and healthy is a lifestyle and it can be hard at times, but it's well worth it. Once you eat clean long enough, all of the junk food becomes unappealing. At times, it does feel good to cheat every so often, but when you feel like garbage later on, you remember that although you think it is pleasing to eat the junk, it really wasn't worth it.

So hopefully that helped. Have the support. Begin changing your lifestyle as well as your thinking. I stopped looking at junkfood as the taboo, delicious, comfort food that you get denied when you're "dieting", then started looking at it for what it is, unhealthy road blocks to what my end goal is. But I am not going to sugar coat it. Every so often, yes, we do cheat. But it is rare. It curbs any lingering craving and lets you know that, hey..every once in a while, it's ok.

It all starts with your mentality, will and support. I hope that helped! Best of luck! And oh, yes..now, I am thinking about pizza lol
my solution... Don't keep junk food in the house!!!! No junk food to resist if there isn't any within miles :)

Seriously though, sometimes if someone is eating something in front of me that i really really want to eat... I hold it up to my nose and smell it really really hard. I know that sounds funny, but we actually taste with our eyes first, then our noses, then our mouths. So seeing it and sniffing it is like 66.67% of the way there. Those who laugh, try it next time, see if it works... It normally does for me :)
lol...this is the funniest thing I've heard in a while...and i will definately try this!!!..thanks bud...come to think about it I guess it can be kinda like when you are cooking - you know, when it's your turn to cook dinner and when everyone has sat down to eat and you have lost your appetite- youre like - eh, I think I'm full off of the smell....is it - is it just me or do ya'll experience the same thing?...anyway, lol...Garrett I'll let you know if it works for me...
LOL thats so funny you said that...I have the person describe it to me as they are eating it!! HAHAHA It's totally weird and I dont care. It works. LOL I live vicariously through them for that second. Wow...this is too funny.
I have a few ways I control the snack tempations. First, I allow myself a cheat meal every week. It usually includes my favourite things. This gives me something to look forward to at the end of a hard week. On those days when I am really tempted, I just remind myself that if I hang tight and stick to the plan, I can eat it without the guilt in just a few days. And believe me, I MAKE THOSE DAYS COUNT!! Also, my refrigerator door is covered with pictures I have taken from mags of girls who I admire and who have amazing competition bodies. I remind myself that there is a reward for resisting the temptation. Many a time that has been what has gotten me past the craving. Most importantly, I have some pics of myself from my last competition last season. It reminds me of how hard I worked last year to achieve my goal, and that if I did it then, I can certainly do it again. That is the greatest motivation of all!!
Good advice Garrett think I will try that. Thanks Kai I appreciate the support (sorry for getting your mind on pizza lol). My wife is part of how I resist the bad food because she reminds me that I don't need it. She eats pretty good really but sometimes she will eat junk food.
In my family it's on the contrary. it's good that your spouse helps you to overcome those temptations. My husband is not into fitness an healthy eating at all (unfortunately) and he would eat ice cream almost every night in the evenings after dinner. He would never gain weight! But for me it's not just weight management but also health. And now when I'm on my transformation journey it's been challenging at the very beginning until I changed my mind set. I educated myself on healthy eating and training. In one magazine I found comparison pictures of female twins- one with healthy lifestyle and one of not so healthy. You would not believe how diffirent they looked! It's scary! And also I rarely eat out and I cook 5-6 days a week to ensure eating clean. And when I go out I treat my eating the same way. I read somewhere It takes about 30-40 days to lose interest in sugary and fatty foods (meaning fast food and sweets) after you completely stop eating them. I've tried and it works for me. Like my girlfriend said: "I have will and I have power, now I need to combine them! ;o)"
P.S. Give your wife a foot rub- she deserves it. ;o)
To specify about losing interest in junk food- I read it in the book of Daniel G. Amen, M.D. "Change your brain, change your body". Based on the brain type, he can explain why we do what we do, including food addictions. His official site has the free questionarry that can help you to find out your type and give suggestions what supplement to take to help yourself. (Basic supplements).
Temptation? What do you mean? Once you get into bb life style there ain't temptation. If I get past something "yummy" for a fattie it's not like it is for me. I don't see junk food as before. I see as it is. Not healthy at all and I have no interest whatsoever... If you still do you have some problems lol
Hmmm...I wouldn't say that,Marcos. Everyone has a different eating history and quite honestly people have different definitions of "craving." I CRAVE peanuts or something peanuty (sp?) every day. ONLY because I absolutely LOVE peanuts. During pre-season and comp time I have to clear all peanuts and peanuty products out of the house. I honestly do not think that i have a "problem." I enjoy peanuts, that all! ...OH and I can say the same about red wine. I enjoy the great things in life...there is NOTHING wrong with that. The important thing is the ability to look past the short term desire at the bigger picture, which is meeting the goals you work so hard to achieve. THAT is the part where the strength comes in. Quite honestly, as I read somewhere just recently, most people would give their left leg to be on stage showing off the results of the hard work we do!!! But very few every actually get there. Just enjoy the process and all the bumps along the way. :)
Yes Ms Elena Fit my wife deserves a foot rub =) She has always supported me in my Bodybuilding and I know I would not be able to do it without her.
Yeah Ben...thanks for putting the thought of pizza in my head! GRRR....

Seriously though, it is awesome that your wife is so supportive. I must say that my wife is the same way. She has been very concious to try and not eat junk around me. Its been good for her, actually frustrating for her as she is watching me and wants to work out and transform as well, but she is currently juggling two jobs to transition her career, while trying to be a supportive wife and mother! She is doing an awesome job.

Anyway...I agree with others...you have to have support in your house and not keep junk food laying around. If it is around...temptation exists. Usually I just keep really busy around the house to keep my mind off of food. Another thing is keep healthy foods for you and your diet prepared and within reach all the time. That way, when you want junk...just grab that healthy food and eat it. You will find that the craving will go away and you didn't cheat!

Hope that helps. Keep it up man!
