Have you ever heard someone say “I don’t go real heavy, I just use light weight and really focus on the isolation of the muscle.”? I am sure you have and it is usually by someone who reads way too many magazines and is looking for any reason possible to stay away from heavy iron and the work that comes along with moving it. You aren’t one of those people, are you?

News Flash!!! You will not get 22, 20 or 18 inch biceps by doing standing dumbbell curls with 20 pounders… regardless of how amazing you think your form and squeeze are (try to avoid weights that come in a purple or pink, rubber coated version). Sorry! You aren’t going to build an incredible back by doing chainsaws with 35 pound dumbbells and completely ignoring the very existence of deadlifts (not just for powerlifters). If you have ever waited for a casual-lifting soccer mom to finish with the dumbbells so you can bang out some lateral raises….. don’t admit to it.

So lets say you have some pretty good genetics and you can achieve some respectable size, just by looking at weights; congratulations! However, you probably look pretty soft and puffy and lack that rock hard look that most of us are going for. Yes, this is because you avoid the beautiful sound that echoes throughout the gym when you slide another 45 pound plate on the bar. 10 pound plates hitting each other just don’t have the same magical effect. It is like a base drum kicking versus a tambourine.

Yes, controlled, strict and isolated movements play a very important role in the development of our physiques. Yes, bodybuilders and fitness models use these movements. However, incorporating heavy lifting into your program can mean the difference between doing 15 slow and controlled reps on the incline bench with 225 versus doing the same reps with 135. Which one do you think will produce more growth?

Simply put, you need both. This rant could go on forever and there are countless benefits to incorporating heavy lifting into your program, but I am going to stop here. I just cannot stand hearing people tell me that they are focusing on lighter weight with better form as a REPLACEMENT for going heavy. IT IS NOT A REPLACEMENT!! Just admit it…….. unless you are doing your pointless shrugs with straps**, you are a little afraid of too many 45s on the bar at one time. It’s ok, it isn’t for everyone.

**Please, please, please stop loading the bar up with plates and doing shrugs when you cannot deadlift or squat your bodyweight. Nobody is impressed. Shrugs are not a core movement!!!

Thanks
I hear ya! I can't wait to have a few video clips posted along with my 30 day postings...
To create change to the body, hypotrophy...one HAS to stress the proper systems to have such a reaction.

Proper form and technique is KEY at ALL times...BUT...and I say BUT...proper form with the lift, or "stress", you are using. As I curl the 120 lbs DBs...yes, 120's, my body HAS TO shift. I weigh around 220, so almost 50% of my weight is extended in front of me as I curl one of those DBs...yes, I have to lean back or I will EAT the floor...and even tilt some to balance the weight...now THAT'S core training! Balancing and functionally working with 120's or more!

I agree, Lucas. Now...I do also use very strict form when I do volume and on the latter parts of my drop sets. But one does have to go heavy to stimulate growth.

Good post for our bodybuilders and more muscular lifters!
120s? That is it? I said heavy!! hahaha

I agree with you completely Jason. As mentioned before, strict form has an absolutely essential place in the world of muscle development! It just cant be the lone element in someone's routine.

Thanks for the reply, Jason. now go grab some 140s!!
As someone who has lifted heavy his whole life, I think heavy is the way to go but realize I am not a bodybuilder, only an old powerlifter. Heavy weights give you a much better base and when I decide to go light for awhile it does not take long to get back to the strength I had before. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing.
"the beautiful sound that echoes throughout the gym when you slide another 45 pound plate on the bar."

Amen
I agree, heavy lifting is essential. As long as your form is still good you need to lift hard.
The demonization of hardcore lifting and the resulting huge physique is everywhere. No deadlift platforms in the gyms, heavy emphasis on machines and cario equipment, movie stars playing superheroes weighing in at a buck 50, or powerful characters being 100% cgi.
