I love body art as well as bodybuilding. Are these two a bad mix? Can a tattoo really hurt a bodybuilder? Please let me know.

a small well placed tat looks good on a lot of folks but a large in your face will just hide what you have worked so long and hard to build.
Well, Oscar, that is actually harder than you think to answer...
The SHORT answer is that it will have no effect on the scoring as long as it doesn't "take away" from the ability to see the physique and it does not take away attention from the physique... the HARD part about that is trying to define the above....

Some judges hate them, some love them..some really don't care...here at REAL, we are developing a team of judges so that the competitors can expect a certain range of scoring...so they can know what to expect adn be able to directly identifiy what went wrong...or what went right!
I don't have any tattoos and don't want them. I personally think anyone with a tattoo and is a competitor should cover their tattoos. I'm sure the judges have learned to overlook them, but as a competitor and when l sit in the audience to watch, I find the tattoos to be very distracting. Besides your body is a work of art in itself why does one need to add a tattoo?? And you've worked hard to get you body where it is so why tattoo it?? Some are so large on the backs and arms I sit trying to figure out what it is and what possessed them to get it. I say cover them!! Don't they make some kind of cover cream for tattoos??
There is a cream body make-up (The name eludes me at the moment), but it's not really feasible for bodybuilding. (If even possible.)

The problem is that you have to get the cream that matches your exact skin tone that day. It's also oil based, and will run as soon as you put on posing oil.

I wanted to cover mine for a photo shoot about 3 years ago, but the 'expert' couldn't seem to match my skin tone right, and when I used oil, it all came right off. Waste of $75 and about 4 hours!

I'm sure there's something that they make for tv/films that would work, but it's probably not easily accessible to you or me.
I have seen shows whereby women and men have tattoos and you definitely notice them when the light hits them. Some people like them for show some don't. The artwork on some of the tattoos are unique, but I wouldn't do one for myself, for I don't like needles. lol
I know this is a VERY old post but I just wanted to comment...I love body art as well and indeed have quite a few large pieces. Having said that, I'm hoping that by rolling myself around in Hershey's Syrup and then Pouring a bag of Charcoal over me that it will do the trick of masking my ink ;) We'll see come May 8th if my technique works lol.
I have tattoos some previous to competing, some after. I don't think it hurts you as a competitor, if you have a great physique people know. I do think that ink takes away from the overall aesthetic of a well sculpted body. A great physique is art in itself and I think certain tattoos draw the eyes away from the muscle definition
