What is your REAL story? Do you compete? Do you wish to compete? Are you on a transformation journey? Website??
I guess I started striking poses when I was 2 or 3 years old (because my dad was always muscular). I was always into it. Then fast foward to 93, when I was 9 or 10, my father started doing a bunch of “Natural Shows” and it was kind of a new thing in bodybuilding. At that time I started studying everything about bodybuilding. I was reading both Flex , Muscle & Fitness AND Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness Magazines. (So I knew the best of both worlds). I looked up to IFBB Pros like Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray and Kevin Leverone. But I also looked up to WNBF Pros like Dave Goodin, Kevin Davidson and Gary Gomez at that time. So from 93-96’ me and my younger brother dan (who is 2.5 years younger than me) went to every one of my fathers shows (except for NY City shows). And because I knew a lot about bodybuilding for my age, I was teaching my father certain aspects of the sport that he didn’t know a lot about (mostly posing, but also about anatomy and symmetry). I designed my father’s best posing routine to date at this point (a slow st. elmos fire song, then converted to rocky 4 song)when i was 10 years old. At every show, he had the MC announce that his 10 year old son choreographed his routine. Dan and I also helped coach him on stage for the mandatory poses. Because of this, many competitors that were in the same contests as my father started to realize we were always with him and they can tell we knew what we were doing, so they would ask us questions. “Hey Paulie…..do you think I peaked for the show?”, They would show me there quads and abs and I would give them an honest reply….” I think you are retaining a touch of water in your quads and hams.” And they respected mine and my brothers thoughts (mind you, we were 10 and 8!). As a young kid, I knew I always wanted to compete, but never thought I would be able to gain the kind size that was necessary to be competitive. Also, watching my father back in the mid 90’s, he had awesome symmetry, but I always thought his lower body was “slightly” lagging and that’s why he was always on the verge of getting his WNBF Pro card. So I told myself, if I ever competed I would make my physique the way I wanted it ! I wanted to have big and almost “slightly” overpowering legs. My legs were so skinny to start, and they were pretty stubborn too, but little by little I started to mold them. Then I figured out I wanted to do my first show (April 2003 NGA Northeast), and I started doing research, on who the best amateurs and teens in the area looked like, while I was impressed, I knew I was right there.
Got screwed in that first show at 19 years old (controversial 3rd in the teen, 2nd in novice Light-heavyweight). I knew what kind of improvements to make and came in .5 lb lighter the next year at 20 years old and entered the 2004 NGA Northeast and won the novice middleweight and overall novice title. Entered the Can/Am the next week and took a debatable 2nd in the Open Lightheavyweight Class. Went back to the drawing board, i knew i was close to an NGA Procard in spring of 04'....so i decided to take the fall off. Came back in spring of 05' and came in 2lbs heavier and just as tight if not tighter! I won the Open Light heavyweight Class and overall to win my NGA Pro-Card and was the youngest NGA pro currently in the nation. And i ended up doing 4 more shows in the next 5 weeks! Crazy stuff. Did my first guest posing at the NGA Can/Am the next week. Did my first INBF Show the next week in Jersey (took 3rd in open light heavy) and that pissed me off, because my ultimate goal was the WNBF pro-card, the NGA pro card was just a accomplishment and stepping stone. Hit the INBF NorthernStates Super Natural and won the Open Lightheavyweight Class and lost the overall to my father for the Pro-Card! It was the first time me and my father would compete against each other and it was awsome to share the stage with him in his WNBF Pro Card win. Then 2 weeks later, me and my father flew to texas for my first pro show.
Philosophies and Beliefs:
Listen to your body in terms of training, and understand the anatomy of your body and learn on how to train proper for your anatomy. On the Nutrition side, not 1 diet is the answer, you must learn your body and what foods work for you.
Words of Advice to REAL competitors and those on REAL transformation journeys:
If you are interested in the sport and like working out but you know nothing about bodybuilding or figure, hire a contest coach or guru.
