What is your REAL story? Do you compete? Do you wish to compete? Are you on a transformation journey? Website??
Transformation JourneyMy weight loss journey began May 5th 2009, a week after my daughters 10th birthday. My wife bought me a 3 month personal training package that included 2-30 minute workouts a week at that gym. The following week I signed up at another gym for 2 more sessions per week, which came to 4 total workouts each week. In addition to working out, I loaded an application on my iPhone called Lose It and put in all my stats in the program, such as height, weight and age. The program asked for weight loss goals, with the most aggressive being 100 pounds over the period of a year. For that amount it said you can eat 2686 calories per day. I am a chef and I thought to myself that, 2600 calories is a lot for me to consume each day. I know that basically 1 pound is roughly equivalent to 3100 calories, so in order to lose 1 pound a day I would have to burn an extra 500 calories per day. After that I could only eat what I burned over the 500 calories. In other words, for one day if I burned 2200 calories at the gym, I could consume 1700 calories. This basically gave me a deficit of the 3100 calories a day. I lost 32 pounds in the month of September alone. My motivation for that month was because September 30th is my birthday. This goal I set for myself seemed to be obtainable.
On June 13, my son was involved in a horse accident where he was kicked in the abdomen by a horse and dissected his pancreas. He was unable to eat by mouth for about 4.5 months. Since I was already doing a life style change, if my wife and daughter decided to go out to eat and I would stay home with my son. He was okay with me drinking protein shakes and eating protein bars, dirt and worms as he would say. That helped me greatly. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and that was God’s way of telling me I needed to get my priorities in line or continue downhill. I lost my first 100 pounds in 3.5 months, by using the formula of 500 calories plus what I burned, which was all I would allow myself to consume. I didn’t starve myself on this regiment, just ate the correct food that I enjoyed and could live with. I was scared that if I looked at it as a diet, that once I was finished with it I would gain all the weight back. One of my biggest problems was I never ate breakfast. Being a chef is a very demanding occupation and it is hard to eat when you are serving people. For the first 3 years of Killen’s Steakhouse being open, I was too busy to worry about breakfast. I was the most overweight starved person around. I would usually eat a huge lunch around 2-2:30pm and by then, I was already starving. I would then eat a very late dinner (usually a fast food drive thru), then go straight to bed. So I was eating on the average of every 8-10 hours a day. The body goes into starvation mode and stores all of the calories you intake. I had to learn to look at food completely different and not live to eat, but eat to live! It got harder after the first 100pounds. I stopped the trainers after 3 months and started training myself until about November of 2009. I then got with a trainer who was an ex MMA fighter and he had me doing things I never thought I would be able to do.
As of today I am down 217 pounds. I still want to lose another 30 pounds and possibly begin competing in fitness competitions. I would like to compete in the Arnold Classic next year. I would like to tell you, as hard as it was losing this much weight, I now know anything is possible. If I can do it, with being around all the great food on a daily basis, anybody can do it. You just have to want it!
